The carpet

The carpet in Algeria has long been the business of everyone, and of all.  All rural households had trades and this was part of traditional apprenticeship given the importance of sheep farming.  The Algerian rug is distinguished by authentic shapes and styles, even today combined with modern touches.

There are four main regions of the carpet.  In the East, in the Aurès, the great tribes of N & memchas and Haractas make an original rug in shades of red, blue and black.  In the region of Setif, the Guergour carpet, considered as a luxury object, reveals its Anatolian influences with its floral compositions.  The Jebel Amour symbolizes the art of the Highlands: this carpet of high wool, called frach or q’tifa, most often red and black, is decorated with simple geometric figures.

The carpet of the Kalaa Beni Rached, like that of Ait Hichem in Kabylie, stands out with a Berber pattern decor.  Finally, Algeria offers many other products of weaving, less known, but equally original and astonishing: the carpets of Oued Souf, the reversible hangings of Kabylie, Beni Ysguen rugs, the light draperies of Ghardaïa or the tanchera of M'zab, who holds  an important place in the local traditions.
