Church of Santa Cruz, Oran

Monastery of Santa Cruz, Oran

The Church of Santa Cruz or the Monastery of Santa Cruz is a monastery built on Mount Marjago under the fortress of Santa Cruz which means the Holy Cross.

It was built in 1850 after a cholera outbreak in 1849 that killed hundreds of people every day.  It was later expanded and the statue of the Virgin was installed on the tower in 1873. The tower bell weighing 1178 kg was manufactured in Bordan Billion workshops.

Since the opening of more than a century and a half the Holy Lady also known as the Virgin of Oran attracts many Christian and curious believers for her role in the cholera epidemic in 1849 and to seek their wishes.  Its location offers a great view of the bay and city of Oran.  The statue of the Virgin that was present in the church is now located in the Sanctuary of Santa Cruz.
